2,000 Hertfordshire primary school pupils design a festive card for Armed Forces personnel

The Hertfordshire Armed Forces Covenant Board received over 2,000 festive card designs for their Hertfordshire Heroes Christmas Competition this year!

The competition involved drawing a Christmas card for Armed Forces personnel serving away from home over the holiday period. The winner of the competition is Jessica Andrea Frumuselu, from Hartsbourne Primary School in Bushey. She has won a day of adventure at Northwood HQ along with the runner up, Misha, from Orchard Primary School.

The Hertfordshire Armed Forces Covenant Board, known locally as Hertfordshire Heroes, runs this competition every year to help bring the military and civilian communities closer. This year, Hertfordshire Heroes worked more closely with Northwood HQ, who produced a video to help promote the competition. The video was intended for teachers and children to get an insight into all the things the military does. Twenty schools took part and Hertfordshire Heroes received the highest number of entries to date.

Announcing the winner, Group Captain Jason Sutton, Commanding Officer at Northwood HQ said: “All the designs were wonderful, and we are so impressed by the pupils’ talent. We loved Jessica’s card as it’s beautifully drawn, everyone is happy and smiling. And that’s how we want our soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen to be this Christmas and with their families as well. Jessica has given them all inspiration to be happy”.

Chairman of the Hertfordshire Armed Forces Covenant Board, Cllr Terry Douris, said: “After such a testing year for our community, it is amazing to see the continued success and growth of this competition. This year’s entries excelled in creativity and empathy and were all worthy of winning. We are very proud to have so many talented children in Hertfordshire and are thankful to their schools and teachers who helped them take part to show their appreciation of the UK armed forces. We are incredibly grateful for the continued excellent support that we have with Northwood Headquarters.”
