Colchester’s Armed Forces Day 2022 event on Saturday 25th June

The 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team and Colchester Garrison Show will take over Abbey Field, Colchester on Saturday 25 June to mark Armed Forces Day 2022.
Everyone is encouraged to turn up to this free family event, to show their support for the local military community on this national celebration day.

The Parachute Regiment’s Red Devils freefall team will be swooping down from the skies during the event, British Army Band Colchester will fill the air with music, and there’s a dramatic combat demonstration planned for the big finale. The event involves the participation of veterans and cadets from across Essex. Organised by Colchester Garrison every other year, visitors can expect food and drink stalls, bouncy castles, and free parking (although visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport where possible). And that’s not all, because there will be a RAF Puma helicopter, artillery, and a field hospital deployed by parachute.

An insight into the garrison’s history will be given by living historians showing the kit and weaponry of First and Second World War soldiers and Merville Barracks’ Dakota transport aircraft will be open for people to see and touch.

Lieutenant Colonel Ed Rankin, Commander of Colchester Garrison, said: “Armed Forces Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the link between the military and the civilian community in which they live and work. The residents of Essex are hugely supportive of soldiers and their families – which we in uniform are hugely appreciative of – and it is important that the Army gives something back in return. The Show promises to be an exciting, interesting, and entertaining day which I warmly invite everyone to attend.”

Thousands of people enjoyed the 16 Air Assault Brigade and Colchester Garrison Show today (Sat 29 June). The event showcased ColchesterÕs 16 Air Assault Brigade and looked back to the townÕs military history as the 75th anniversaries of D-Day and Operation Market Garden in the Second World War are marked this year. The event on Abbey Field culminated in an explosive combat demonstration that saw 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment show how they would assault an enemy position. Modern equipment on static display included bridging equipment and a field hospital that can be deployed by parachute; while living historians show the kit and weaponry of Second World War paratroopers and soldiers of the First World War. The Red Devils – The Parachute Regiment’s freefall display team – dropped in to herald the signing of a bond of friendship between Colchester, the home of British airborne forces, and Renkum, a Dutch district including the village of Oosterbeek where British and Polish paratroopers made their final stand at the end of Operation Market Garden in September 1944. The crowds then showed their appreciation to veterans and cadets from across Essex at a marchpast led by The Band of The Parachute Regiment, with The Lord-Lieutenant of Essex Jennifer Tolhurst taking the salute.
