Weekend of fieldcraft for Suffolk cadets

A weekend of fieldcraft for Suffolk cadets in their county's ACF included patrols across open ground as the sun shone down on them

Last weekend gave all the all the cadets in A Company, Suffolk Army Cadet Force (ACF), the chance to develop their fieldcraft skills out in the open.

The weekend of fieldcraft for Suffolk cadets included these two girls, both wearing glasses and ACF fatigues, learning how to set up a camouflaged lean-to shelter, which they are pictured sitting under

Fieldcraft involves a host of outdoor skills,  from learning the art of camouflage to senior cadets leading their own section through intense night patrols. Youngsters in A Coy learned skills from cadet force adult volunteers including observation, field signals and night training, before spending a night under the canopies they had practised setting up.

Sunday morning started with a fry-up breakfast before the second day’s training. In all, the weekend of fieldcraft for Suffolk cadets helped them gain skills and confidence to navigate challenging situations out of their usual comfort zones.

An early start for the cadets saw these two wearing camouflage lying prone at the base of a tree, aiming rifles as they identify their distant comrades across open ground through the morning fog

As the picture above shows, conditions early in the day were quite misty, but fieldcraft can’t rely on perfect weather and the cadets still got stuck into their training. That learning contributed to cadets’ Army Cadet Syllabus study across all star levels—the tests that can take them to promotion in rank within the ACF.

Each cadet need to pay just £14 for the entire weekend, including all activities and meals, with reduction in the cost available to those receiving free school meals.

A big well done to all the youngsters for their hard work, and to the cadet force adult volunteers for delivering an enjoyable and informative weekend for the cadets.
