Cadets and veterans turn out for Suffolk Show 2025

Cadets’ and veterans’ turn-out for this year’s Suffolk Show was strong, as dozens of young people and cadet force adult volunteers (CFAVs) joined adult reservists, full-time uniformed personnel—and thousands of other showgoers—for the two-day event.

Trinity Park, near Ipswich, hosted the Suffolk Show on 28 and 29 May. The iconic agricultural event dates back to 1832 and celebrates the rich heritage, culture, and industry of Suffolk. Suffolk Agricultural Association organises what has become a beloved tradition and a highlight of the county’s calendar.

Cadets and Adult Volunteers from Suffolk Army Cadet Force (ACF) were busy through both days, running their recruitment and activity stand in the show’s “Military Zone” to promote the benefits of being a cadet. In serving proudly, young people who took part earned themselves the Cadet in the Community Award.

Young people and adult volunteers from 188 (Ipswich) Sqn fulfilled a similar role on behalf of RAF Air Cadets’ Norfolk and Suffolk Wing in the Military Zone.

Also in attendance with their full-time comrades were reservists from 2624 Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force, 6 Regiment Army Air Corps, 3 RAF Police Squadron, 158 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps. In each case, the reservists were able to showcase their capabilities and broaden public understanding of how people can serve in uniform while continuing a civilian career.

Several military charities and support organisations had stands at the Suffolk Show, too, including the Royal British Legion (RBL). Frances Jacks-Cobbold and Kate Ferries from Suffolk RBL made it their mission over the two days to ensure that every other exhibitor in the Military Zone had Legion flags on display—and to hand them out to young showgoers.

Paul Greenwood, chair of the RLB Newmarket and District branch, said: “The Suffolk County RBL stand raised a total of £837.72 at the Suffolk Show. This came from donations for a “teddy tombola”, from players of our “ball in the hole” game and other merchandise.

“We were supported by Ipswich Sea Cadets on the stand, who were a credit to their unit.”

Suffolk Show organisers made sure the 80th anniversary of Victory in European Day in May and the forthcoming Victory in Japan Day in August with a “Victory 80” display and parade. Cadets and CFAVs were among the people in uniform to perform the Royal Salute taken by the Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk, Lady Euston, on His Majesty the King’s behalf.

Lady Euston, accompanied by two of her chosen cadets for the year—Suffolk ACF’s Cdt RSM West and Cdt WO1 White (all pictured below)—also presented awards at the show.

The Suffolk Show is so much more than the agricultural and farming event it was known for historically and is now so large and diverse that it really does feature something for everyone. Its finale on Thursday 29 May even included a display from the British Army Parachute Display Team, the Red Devils.

Overall the show had a great Armed Forces and veterans turn-out for Suffolk, helping to make it a rewarding two days for all involved.
