Restorative measures for LGBT+ veterans and their loved ones

HM Government is offering restorative measures—including proper support—to people affected by the ban between 1967 and 2000 on LGBT personnel serving in the UK’s Armed Forces.

Following the final report from the LGBT Veterans Independent Review last year, the Ministry of Defence accepted the intent behind all 49 of the Review’s recommendations.

If you or someone you know was affected by the ban, you might now be entitled to restorative measures. A wider range of these measures is available following publication of the report than in an earlier Government scheme.

People who believe they may be eligible for restorative measures need to make an application , as the Government has no single reliable way of identifying everyone the ban affected.

There is full information on the Government website, GOV.UK, including details of the restorative measures available along with a guide on applying and responses to frequently asked questions about the review and the Government’s response.

People who had a longtime close relationship with an affected LBGT veteran who has since passed away—and who could be expected to represent their wishes—should also consider applying. This group is referred to by the Government as “people of sufficient interest”.
