Suffolk’s C Company Army Cadets demonstrated resilience and adaptability during a successful weekend training exercise at the Cadet Training Centre.

An unexpected change to the training environment provided an opportunity to reinforce one of the Army Cadet Force’s core values – overcoming challenges through teamwork and initiative.

Due to restricted access to the planned training area, the weekend programme was swiftly reorganised with all activities taking place in and around the training establishment. Thanks to careful planning by Adult Volunteers, the revised programme ensured cadets continued to make excellent progress while maintaining a safe and engaging training environment.

Training was delivered according to Star levels, allowing cadets to receive instruction appropriate to their stage of development. For 1 Star cadets, Saturday’s programme focused on developing fundamental military skills through lessons in Skill at Arms and Fieldcraft.

During Skill at Arms training, cadets strengthened their understanding of the Cadet General Purpose (GP) Rifle. This reinforced the importance of safe weapon handling, drills and the principles that underpin marksmanship training. Fieldcraft lessons saw cadets develop practical skills including the construction of a two-person shelter, administration in the field and sentry duties. These essential subjects provide the foundation for operating effectively and safely in a field environment while encouraging teamwork, self-discipline and attention to detail.

On Sunday training resumed with further 1 Star Fieldcraft lessons covering reactions to effective enemy fire, together with personal camouflage and concealment. These practical sessions challenged cadets to apply the skills they had learned while developing confidence, situational awareness and effective decision-making.

Although the weekend required a change of plan, the professionalism and flexibility shown by both Adult Volunteers and cadets ensured that all training objectives were successfully achieved. The exercise once again highlighted the ability of Suffolk’s cadets to adapt to changing circumstances. Adult Volunteers continued to deliver high-quality training that develops confidence, leadership and the skills needed for future progression within the Army Cadet Force.
