An RAF Air Cadet from Ely has come top of the class over the past year following a competitive selection process across his area.

Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) Russell-Cook, a member of the 1094 (Ely) Sqn, was named Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing’s Cadet of the Year for 2025. His award was announced by the Wing’s officer commanding (OC), Wg Cdr Rob Bradshaw.

CWO Russell-Cook was selected following a highly competitive process that saw eight of the top cadets from across 28 squadrons interviewed for the title.

Nominees were evaluated on their personal development, achievements within the Air Cadets and their future ambitions beyond the organisation. Judges praised the “exceptionally high standard” of candidates with selection determined through a closely contested scoring process.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment and thoroughly deserved…To be recognised as the best cadet in the Wing is a remarkable achievement, and we are incredibly proud of him”

To be recognised as the best cadet in the Wing is a remarkable achievement, and we are incredibly proud of him.

CWO Russell-Cook will now represent the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing at the next stage of the competition. There he will meet Group Captain David Boreham RAF, regional commandant for all 179 squadrons in the Central and East region of England.

One candidate from this next stage will be chosen to represent the region at the national Dacre Sword Competition. The winner of the Dacre Sword is recognised as the top cadet out of all 36,000 Air Cadets across the UK.
