Suffolk Army Cadets joined the Stowmarket community last weekend for the town’s annual carnival.

Some members of the Army Cadet Force (ACF) took part in the carnival procession while other cadets and adult cadet force volunteers staffed a recruitment stand on Stowmarket’s recreation ground nearby.

Cadets from Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket and Wattisham detachments all attended, along with Cadet Sgt Maj Lawrence Thomas and Probationary Instructor Ian Morrison, a Stowmarket local.

The cadets in the procession (pictured above) wore ACF clothing and equipment that represented the activities they practise, including fieldcraft, water sports, rock climbing and hiking for charity.

They also proudly displayed the Wattisham detachment’s standard as they marched and took turns pulling their float, the centrepiece of which was a large model of an Apache helicopter. The trolley-mounted model was about three metres long and held drinking water for the processing cadets, along with their surplus personal kit.

The float earned the young people of Suffolk ACF an award for the best walking group in the procession. Congratulations to them, and thanks to their comrades on recruitment stand, who took the time to explain the benefits of joining the cadet movement to Stowmarket residents and visitors.
