Bedfordshire Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets attend special events

Bedfordshire Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadets have been busy supporting the Lord-Lieutenant on her duties in the county this month.

On the 15th, HRH The Duke of Gloucester visited three venues in Bedfordshire. Staff Sergeant Florence Cordell from New Cardington Detachment 5 Company attended the first venue, Bedford School. Her role in the visit was to open HRH’s car door and support the Lord-Lieutenant to host the visit. There HRH inspected the Combined Cadet Force contingents from Bedford School, Bedford Girls’ School, Bedford Modern School, St Andrew’s School, Rushmoor School and The Bedford Free School. HRH then unveiled a plaque in the Memorial Hall to mark his visit.

Colour Sergeant Caleb Savery was in the parade when the Bedford Modern School CCF contingent was inspected by HRH.

HRH’s royal inspection was of particular significance as it marked the centenary of the last royal inspection of both Bedford School and Bedford Modern School contingents in 1918, also at Bedford School, by the Duke’s grandfather, King George V.

Florence Cordell Bedfordshire Lord Lieutenant's CadetOn Sunday 19th May, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire Helen Nellis held her annual service of thanksgiving at St Mary’s Church, Woburn. The Lord-Lieutenant was supported by her seven Lord-Lieutenant Cadets, including Staff Sergeant Cordell, who presented the Bedfordshire County Standard at the front of the church and read a prayer during the service.

Over 400 people from across Bedfordshire came together to celebrate the work of the Voluntary Organisations in Bedfordshire. The theme for this year’s service was “Older People”.

After the service, the Lord-Lieutenant said that her Cadets were “first class in their demeanour, their helpfulness and their ability to shine and demonstrate how much their generation has to offer.”

Lord-Lieutenant’s cadets are ambassadors for their cadet organisations, selected to show the wider public what excellent young people there are in our communities.

They are given opportunities to attend some of the Lord-Lieutenant’s events. The Lord Lieutenant understands that the cadets will have school, college or work commitments, so most events will be for evening and weekend functions. Their duties at events may sometimes be limited to opening doors for dignitaries, but they get the opportunity to attend those events and meet lots of equally interesting people.
