We take great pleasure in announcing that Sqn Ldr Bernard Tisley RAF VR(T), has been appointed as a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the 2013 Birthday Honours List.
Recently promoted to Wg Cdr, Bernard Tisley is the Regional Gliding Officer for Central and East Region of the Air Cadet Organisation. Wg Cdr Tisley was commissioned in the RAF VR(T) thirty five years ago as a cadet squadron officer. Following a move to South Wales he joined 636 Volunteer Gliding School (VGS) going solo in a Cadet Mk III glider in 1980.
Another move saw him join 637 VGS at Little Rissington where he ascended the gliding instructor categories to A2 level. Poor health led to a cessation of his flying career but he continued to serve as a Wing Gliding Liaison Officer on Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing and then took on the role of Regional Gliding Liaison Officer at Central & East Region ATC. “Whilst I was sad that my flying career came to an end so abruptly, the experience has been useful in my new role” he said “I am a sort of poacher turned gamekeeper and can speak the same language as my VGS colleagues which is very helpful.”
Wg Cdr Tisley has now taken on the role as Regional Gliding Officer, a new post created following a re-organisation of the command structure of the VGS. “I feel very proud, excited and privileged to receive this honour” he said “Not only for me but for all my colleagues in the Air Cadet Organisation who give up their time to give our youth the best start in life possible.”
