Does your organisation employ members of the Reserve Forces, or are you looking to increase the support you offer? Would you like to share your knowledge and good practice?
In partnership with the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Health, NHS Employers launched NHS Reserve Forces Champions. The scheme was created to increase the awareness of Reservists within the NHS, and to highlight the benefits that employing reservists can have for organisations and employers.
Through the use of local networks, the champion scheme will not only facilitate stronger relationships between your trust, its military units and Regional Employer Engagement contacts, but also with other reservist employers within the region.
By becoming a champion, you will enable your trust to be recognised as a reservist friendly employer and demonstrate your public commitment to supporting members of the Armed Forces.
Champions will be required to show their support by achieving the following:
Display their contact details on the NHS Employers Reserve Forces Footprint Map, created to share information of local contact details for the military and the Regional Employer Engagement Director
Supply a statement of support which will be visible on the NHS Employers website
Highlight their position to the Reservists within their organisation
Encourage their organisation to apply for, and achieve, the different award levels of the Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS)
Encourage their organisation to sign the Armed Forces Covenant
Share relevant links and good practice via the NHS Employers website and on their internet/intranet, as well as talking to colleagues about supporting reservists
Share information, which will be supplied by NHS Employers, on how your organisation supports reservists at recruitment and induction stages
Make or strengthen links with their Regional Employer Engagement contact/network, supported by NHS Employers.
The champion scheme is open to anyone within your organisation who takes the lead on supporting the Reservists in your workforce, or has an interest in this area. Many employers will have taken steps to achieve most of the above, and may also have an identified lead.
They would therefore look to strengthen these links to relevant organisations, and offer supporting tools and resources.
In return for being a champion NHS Employers will offer you updates through their NHS Reserve Forces Champions newsletter, exclusive access to new resources to be used during recruitment and induction, early access to new tools being launched later in the year, and the opportunity to be able to work with NHS Employers to tailor resources, depending on your organisations requirements.
To nominate your champion please visit the champions’ web page and complete the short registration. Once this has been processed, you will be sent your bespoke NHS Reserve Forces Champions welcome pack.
Quotes of support
Tracy Taylor, chief executive of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust
“We employ a number of reservists and ex-service personnel, many of whom are in management and leadership positions. We recognise and appreciate the skills and qualities developed through military training and actively encourage our staff to consider reservist employment.
Our reservist employees receive additional qualifications, exceptional training and unique experiences. In return, we receive a very dedicated, well trained and enthusiastic member of staff who is keen to foster team work and take on leadership responsibilities. We are very proud to support the Armed Forces and would encourage other NHS trusts to become champions.’
“As one of the largest acute NHS foundation trusts in the country we recognise opportunities to be gained through working in partnership with NHS Employers and the Ministry of Defence in support of our Reserve Forces community.
We believe we have a moral duty to support those who give so much to assisting those in need, often in the most challenging of environments, whilst simultaneously reaping the benefits of a mutually beneficial partnership. Our reservist employees undergo some of the most advanced training and development available.
These opportunities, combined with exposure to leadership challenges sometimes in unchartered territory, truly make them remarkable people. The opportunity to become a NHS Reserve Forces Champion here at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in support of increasing awareness amongst the NHS community is therefore a most welcome opportunity.”
Alison Kingscott, director of human resources and organisational development at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust
“As an NHS foundation trust with close links with the military across Salisbury Plain, we are always keen to provide support to staff who are members of the Reserve Forces as part of our ongoing support of the military.
We are keen to champion employers supporting reservist staff as we recognise that this is both beneficial to the individual, who learns new skills and behaviours, and to us as an employer, who benefits from this enhanced skill base.
We have seen the positive impact reservists have on their non-reservist colleagues in terms of attitude and temperament which goes towards supporting all of our staff.
We would encourage any NHS employer to support those staff who are already reservists or who wish to join the military reservists as the rewards experienced back into the organisation are well worth it.”
