East Anglia RFCA host three networking breakfasts for local employers

During June, our employer engagement team were very busy across the region inviting businesses to partner with Defence.

The first event was held at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire where Lt Col Mary Read, Commanding Officer of 254 Medical Regiment, awarded a bronze Employer Recognition Scheme Award to Mr Adrian Hawkins of Hertfordshire LEP.

Nearly 30 Hertfordshire based employers attended. Lt Col Mary Read gave the audience a Commanding Officer’s view of her reservist unit 254 Medical Regiment and Captain Tom Moor from 3 Royal Anglian discussed what life as a reservist is really like. James Moore from Career Transition Partnership offered recruitment advice to those wishing to recruit service leavers and our REED Kristina Carrington discussed the ways in which businesses can partner with Defence via the Armed Forces Covenant and the Employer Recognition Scheme.

Our next port of call was the Army Reserve Centre in Peterborough to showcase the talents of 158 Regiment RLC and welcome Cambridgeshire based employers.

Lt Col Mary Read again presented a Commanding Officer’s view as 254 Medical Regiment have a footprint across Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

On this occasion, reservist Maj Anna Swales talked to the audience about the reservist experience and Amy Flynn from A14 Integrated Delivery Team shared her experiences as a military spouse.

Towards the end of the month, just ahead of Armed Forces Day (30th June), 80 employers attended an exclusive event behind the wire at Merville Barracks, Colchester to discover how partnering with Defence can benefit their businesses.

Employers had the opportunity to hear first-hand from soldiers who live and work in the town. Welcomed by Garrison Commander Lt Col Steven Caldwell, guests received an overview of 16 Air Assault Brigade from the Brigade’s Deputy Commander Col Andrew Jackson.

Keynote speakers introduced employers to the Reservist experience, external placements in industry, transferable skills that service personnel offer and how to tap into service leavers for recruitment opportunities.

Kristina Carrington, Regional Employer Engagement Director on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, explained the benefits of partnering with Defence and offered suggestions on how local businesses can support Armed Forces Week, a national celebration of all the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets. 

Businesses can pledge their support to the Defence community under the Armed Forces Covenant. Throughout 2017, East Anglia celebrated 74 businesses signing the Armed Forces Covenant which is a promise from the nation to ensure that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

The Essex employers also enjoyed several ‘hands on’ experiences at the Barracks. They were able to meet and interact with

  • A Parachute Regiment Infantry soldier with parachute equipment and virtual reality goggles.
  • An airborne signaller with TacSat radio equipment.
  • An airborne combat medical technician with trauma pack equipment.
  • An air assault supplier/logistician with laptop showing MJDI (Management of Joint Deployed Inventory), the deployed stores and accounting software.
  • A physical training rehabilitation instructor with rehab equipment – parachute trained.
  • A General Duties Military Police Officer with personal Policing equipment.
